That Time My Son Reminded Me to Believe in Myself

Every now and then I doubt myself…I know who does that? None of us surely!

Well, being one of those rare women who can, at times lose sight of her confidence (thanks for that “Mister” menopause), I was considering taking a break from all things business development and pick it up again in the New Year!

You see, Business Development (particularly if you have always worked in an environment where sales were someone else’s job) is HARD!

The knock backs are constant, the ghosting is often, and the assumption that my Intellectual Property is free for the privilege of sharing my depth of knowledge and expertise with a new audience can wear a person down.

The irony of this is that as a coach, I am working with women all the time helping them to remember how their confidence felt. The tricks and techniques to bring it back to the front and centre so that they can grab their lives, careers and relationships and bring joy and progress back.

BUT… Coaching oneself, isn’t easy!

Hence, me having a moment (or three!).

And then there was the conversation with my 21-year-old son.

He works and live in London so we were facetiming and he was telling me all about how things are going with him, and being the lovely thoughtful lad he is, he asked me how things were going for me (and yes, those of you who are mums to boys - how often do they ask you how YOU are?!).

And it spilled out of my mouth before I could stop myself.

How it all felt so hard!

LinkedIn was side-lining me (and had been for months - as it has for so many female voices but that’s a blog for another day), my tech problems and being ghosted by businesses who had seemed really keen was taking its toll and was it all worth it?

His response…

‘Well mum, you just need to have incredible belief in yourself, that’s what I do’.

Wow!

Wow! On so many levels!

He is right!

Whether you believe in manifestation or not, the one thing that differentiates people who succeed from those who stall is that unwavering belief in themselves.

I KNOW what I do changes lives.

I KNOW that businesses need my specific expertise, knowledge and skills . They gain real return on investment from the time I spend with their Women in Tech.

I KNOW I am doing what I have worked my whole life to do

So, what is there to doubt?

Absolutely nothing.

And then…

Wow! my 21-year-old has just shown me something incredible about himself. That all the work (and he works bloody hard) he does to achieve his ambitions are rooted in this absolute belief in himself and what he can do - and it’s not arrogance (if you ever have the pleasure of meeting him, you know immediately he is an expert in what he does and is incredibly funny with it - perfect dry sense of humour and not an arrogant bone in his body).

So, from the mouths of babes (well, my baby anyway), I have remembered where my confidence is and there is no turning back now.

What about you? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments…
